Sedro-Woolley and Concrete school districts will offer free meals to students during summer break.

The meals will be available to all children 18 years and younger and will be served Mondays through Thursdays.

The Summer Food Program for Children is open to all children regardless of whether they are enrolled in free/reduced meals or other district programs, school district officials said.

The program is an extension of the food services provided to students during the school year, said Amy Grizzel, director of food services for the Sedro-Woolley School District.

“It gives the opportunity for students who eat with us during the school year to have a meal,” she said.

The Sedro-Woolley School District will serve only lunch, while the Concrete School District plans to serve both breakfast and lunch.

The availability of the summer meals program is important, said Lynda Stout, Concrete School District administrative assistant.

If there are families in need, the meals can help conserve the family budget and provide another resource of food, she said. The breakfasts and lunches in Concrete will be available to students enrolled in Concrete School District’s summer programs.

“We want to make sure (students) are eating well, receiving good nutrition and know about nutrition,” Stout said.

Both school districts have participated in the program for several years. It is sponsored by the United States Department of Agriculture and the Washington state Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction.

Each school district is reimbursed based on the amount of meals served during the summer, officials said.

Last year, Sedro-Woolley School District served, on average, about 100 lunches a day and Concrete School District served about 50 lunches a day with less showing up for breakfast, school district officials said.

“It’s for everybody,” Grizzel said. “Any student can eat at no cost. We would love to feed as many as would come.”
