Ten Skagit Valley College Business Management Students recently competed in the Delta Epsilon Chi Association International Collegiate Competition in Atlanta. More than 1,200 business, marketing and culinary students from two- and four-year colleges participated in the competition.
SVC students Sheena Burns of Burlington and Susan Gildow of Shoreline, were finalists at the international level after the first round of competition. Burns placed in the top 10 in the final round of the Retail Management category. Leigh Anne Orcutt of Arlington, Marissa Carr of Stanwood, Sheena Burns, Kirk Casorla of Concrete and Marlee Powell of Mount Vernon, received Awards of Excellence certificates for earning a score higher than 80 percent from judges in their respective events.
Also at the conference, the National DECA Association awarded the Passport Presidential Award to the Skagit Valley College Business Management Program and faculty adviser Kathy Payant. The SVC program was one of only two colleges honored with this award out of the 192 active Delta Epsilon Chi Chapters worldwide. To be considered for the award, students must have planned and participated over the past year in the areas of Civic Consciousness, Leadership Development, Social Intelligence and Vocational Understanding.
To qualify for the international competition, 13 Skagit Valley College Business Management students competed in the February Delta Epsilon Chi State Career Conference held in Leavenworth in the areas of human resource management, retailing, sales management, business-to-business marketing and business ethics. Ten students placed in the top three positions at the state level, with Leigh Anne Orcutt of Arlington, Marlee Powell of Mount Vernon, Erik Knutson of Stanwood, Derrick Gallard of Bellingham and Sheena Burns of Burlington, placing first in their events.
