MOUNT VERNON — Sophomores Caitie Newman and Ben Harty wrapped up their community college athletic careers in award-winning fashion.
Newman and Harty were named Skagit Valley College’s 2007-08 Athletes of the Year at the school’s annual banquet Tuesday night.
Newman was a three-sport participant for the Cardinals, competing in volleyball, basketball and tennis. She won the Most Improved Player award and the Coaches’ Award in volleyball.
She was a first-team all-Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges sophomore alternate in basketball, averaging eight points and six rebounds per game to help the Cardinals reach the NWAACC Tournament.
She was a team captain on the school’s tennis team, helping the Cardinals take second at the NWAACC Tournament. She finished fifth in singles and teamed with Azusa Takahashi to take second in doubles.
Newman will attend the University of Washington in the fall, possibly joining the crew team.
“I think I’ve definitely matured in my two years at Skagit,” Newman said. “I’ve become more of a leader and made a lot of really good friends.”
Harty’s success came on the baseball diamond, where he helped the Cardinals reach back-to-back NWAACC Tournaments.
A power-hitting first baseman/designated hitter, Harty blasted 12 home runs this year, including three in a tie-breaking double-header at Everett to help the Cardinals qualify for the tournament. He finished his SVC career with 19 homers, 87 RBI and 63 runs with a .315 batting average.
“I’ve learned how it is to be a student athlete, how much time and effort it takes,” Harty said.
Harty has signed a letter of intent to New Mexico State for his junior year, and before that plans to play for the San Jose Seals summer collegiate baseball team.
Those plans could change next week if Harty is selected in the Major League Baseball first-year player draft.
“I’ll see what happens,” said Harty, adding that playing professional baseball is his long-term goal. “I’ll keep my fingers crossed.”
