The early crowds have gone, so now is a good time to slip into the Depot Arts Center to see the extraordinary mosaics, carvings, paintings, collages, drawings, metal art, photography, cartoons and more displayed at the popular annual Anacortes School District Student Art Show.
Opening weekend always overflows with enthusiastic young artists and their teachers, parents and grandparents, who are justifiably proud of the work created over the course of the school year. But those who visit the show two weeks after the initial crush will be rewarded with the opportunity to take a more leisurely look at the top work produced by these undiscovered artists.
Many projects in the show are familiar ones — faces drawn with words, gallery-quality animals scratched from wax, finger-painted cherry blossoms and more. These tried-and-true techniques produce outstanding work year after year.
Noteworthy new additions to the show this year include interpretations of a classical Renaissance painting by art history students in the Anacortes Home Education Partnership, and wild cartoon characters created by students in Michael Matson’s After School Arts Program cartooning class. The quality of the show’s photography has taken an exponential leap this year, perhaps because of ASAP classes taught by photojournalist Matt Wallis.
Other After School Arts Program instructors are Michael Stark, Enid Oates, Melissa Hawkins, Debra Mattson, Patty Detzer, Ana Aho, Margot Myers and Jane Hyde. Anacortes School District art and photography teachers are Carl Dellutri, Ruth Backlund, Candice Vitale, Chris Crane, Valerie Robinson, Jim Thompson, Stephanie Schuemann and Deborah Francis. Younger students work with their classroom teachers and visiting artists.
The show continues through Wednesday, March 26. The gallery is open 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
