Lions Clubs in Skagit County hold free public health event
Several Lions Clubs in eastern Skagit County will provide a community health screening Saturday at Hamilton First Baptist Church.
Trained volunteers will screen for sight, glaucoma, hearing, diabetes and blood pressure from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. that day. The event is open to all ages and is not limited to Hamilton residents.
Mount Vernon, Burlington, Sedro-Woolley and Concrete Lions Clubs are working together to bring the health screening upriver, said Katy Carter, a Sedro-Woolley Lions Club member.
The screening is an opportunity for the groups to work together, said Carter, who is chairing the event.
Saturday will be the first time a public health screening is provided by all four groups. The Concrete Lions Club holds an annual health screening for students in the Concrete School District, but has not yet held one for the public.
“We can do more together than by ourselves,” Carter said. “Which is what Lions Club is all about.”
The Lions Health Screening Unit will be at the event to assist with the health screenings. The outfit travels around the Northwest to perform health screenings and is a state licensed, professionally equipped unit staffed with health professionals and volunteers.
The purpose of the event is to help people who may not have access to a primary care physician and make those services available to them, said Lions Club member Lynn Torset. It will also be a social gathering as the four clubs work together.
The Burlington Lions Club is also bringing its concession stand and will provide free hamburgers, hot dogs and beverages.
If people do not have the time, energy or resources to acquire a health screening, they may be unaware of any current or potential health problems, Carter said. The health screening provides people with the opportunity to be screened and the Lions Club is actually going to them, she said.
“We’re promoting Lions Club, but are also showing people what we do,” Carter said.
The screening also doubles as a way to inform Hamilton-area citizens about Lions Club and possibly form an organization in the area. The Sedro-Woolley branch has several members from Hamilton, Torset said.
Lions Clubs contribute to their communities through service projects. Their strongest focus, however, is sight and hearing and the club provides glasses and hearing aids to people unable to obtain them.
There are a lot of people out there who don’t know there’s a Lions Club in town, said Terry L. Carter Sr, a Lions Club member co-chairing the event with his wife Katy.
Three optometrists will be at the health screening to assist anyone with a sight condition that needs addressing. If participants do not have the resources to see a physician or other health professional after the screening, some assistance may be available from Lions Club, Katy Carter said.
Torset said members of the club are looking forward to providing the health screening. Sometimes going to a physician may not be convenient for people, he said.
“This is convenient for people and we’re hoping it will turn out to be something positive to bring people together.”
