You’d participate if it were money

Scenario: An ad appears in the local newspaper for one day. Readers are notified that everyone will receive a check for $100. The catch? There isn’t one. All people have to do is show up at a designated location, sign for the check and then go away $100 richer!

Would nearly everyone find the time to participate in such a giveaway? Sure! And even if most people did not read the ad, chances are they’d still hear about it through the grapevine. News travels fast when $100 is being offered.

Sadly, what is lacking is the same interest and enthusiasm when it comes to participating in national, state and local politics.

How much effort did those who complained about not understanding the caucus/primary system expend attempting to better understand the process?

We are spoon-fed “news” by media pundits, and ballots are mailed to our homes, yet only about 50 percent of us vote.

That number would be closer to 100 percent if but a single story about $100 checks in exchange for voting appeared in newspapers.

And please dear readers, please don’t say that you couldn’t find the time to participate in your precinct caucus. You had 729 days to plan for it; 729 days since the last caucus; one day short of two years to schedule two or three hours into your busy social calendars.

The “why bother, what’s in it for me” lament is a sure way to wind up with what you get — only to later complain about what you got.

A poem for our mother planet

As we watch global warming come closer and closer, I decided I needed to reconnect and figure out a way to do my part to help save this precious creation of god we call Earth. This is my poem, for our mother planet:

The divine present that has been handed to me,
only in a dream do I see the gift of pure beauty,
I tread in the finest greens of thick forest,
Searching for the gift of time and immortal creation,
Infinite power guides me to calm waters,
I bond with rich browns of the vast earth,
I am closer to the touch of the giver’s hand,
Quiet and still the mother becomes,
as fingertips of creation connect,
perusing the soft blades of her luscious grasses,
gazing past the faint white mists of a waterfall,
I notice the purple and yellow pansies growing wild,
Swaying with a breeze warmed by the morning sun,
Head turned to the sky made of vibrant blues,
Buttermilk clouds streak across adding depth to beauty,
The amazement of creation is all around,
I am forever free,
I am forever moved,
By the divine present …

Political speech to gag on

The tiresome, overused words and phrases below are guaranteed to elicit an immediate gag reflex. It is suspected that use of some of these words is highly correlated with political party affiliation (e.g. liberals love to use “proactive” and “nuance” — in the same sentence if possible; conservatives generally favor less sissified words such as “bottom line” and prioritizing.”)

All, however, are equally odious. See if you can find a favorite. Keep a barf bag handy.

1. Iconic
2. Edgy
3. Proactive
4. Nuance
5. Problematic
6. Closure
7. Viable alternative (viable option)
8. Scenario (pronounced with a broad “a”)
9. Chilling
10. Value-added
11. Segue
12. World-class
13. Win win
14. Connectivity
15. Download
16. Dialogue
17. Charisma
18. Gravitas
19. Incentivize (!) (deincentivize!)
20. Tasked (hard to say with a mouthful of scotch)
21. Prioritize
22. Paradigm

America headed down wrong path

Is the mighty dollar so important in your pockets? Just to make myself clear, I’m talking to every politician in our government. Shame on you!

Our forefather, my father, his father, your fathers built this beautiful country. By sweat, tears and pain. Now, we’re outsourcing just about everything overseas. I’m upset with all our politicians!

We the citizens of the U.S. will look forward to fewer jobs, higher prices on everything, fewer schools and cuts, cuts, cuts. Where will it end? Who suffered for this? If you don’t know, I’ll tell you: the people of the U.S. We’re still busting our butts to make government officials rich.

As a citizen of the United States, I am appalled with the decision the military and our government has made in the choice of the freighter. Could it be because of the cuts in the military that’s been made? You have just kicked everyone in the U.S. and beyond in the gut.

Do you not think we would take pride in making something for all of the people who are serving in the military? We would be letting them know that we back them. Remember the song “I’m Proud to be an American”? Sadly, we are feeling less and less proud, especially because of the choices our government officials make that we have to live with.

Wake up, politicians, and see what’s really going on. Come down from your plush conference rooms. Come see the people who have to put up with your decisions. Come join us, we need your help! Save what our forefathers’ started for us. Bring back our factories, our jobs, schools and anything else that’s been taken away from us.

I am very proud to be an American, but I’m afraid we are headed down the wrong path.

Lower gas prices to help economy

The price of oil is going up so fast that most of us cannot fill our tanks. Who will help?

Or whom do we blame? Our president? He said the other day that he did not know that gas was going up to $4 a gallon. His stimulus package does not sound that good to me. Whether it be $300 or $1,200, most of us will go out and spend it on something we don’t really need, or put it in the bank. I don’t see how this will help the economy. The government should keep that money to bring down the debt.

I think the No. 1 way to help our economy is to bring down the price of gas. Truckers have to charge more to deliver our needs, and airlines charge more to fly. Our whole way of life is dependent on oil.

Bush has been going around the world trying to sell democracy. Why can’t he go to the oil companies and appeal to them to lower the price of oil? When I hear that some oil companies’ profits are $40 billion and when the general public is having a hard time filling their heating and automobile tanks, something is wrong with this picture.

The American public is being worked over by the oil companies.

Let’s not put all the blame on the president. What about the people in our Congress? All they have been doing this past year is trying to sell themselves to the American people. Those politicians should get out and do something rather than bashing Bush.

The people in Washington, D.C., should get off their rumps and make the price of oil affordable.

Another attack on Social Security

The National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare has learned of another attempt by the Bush administration to retreat from the government’s financial commitments to our Social Security and Medicare programs — and its obligation to America’s seniors.

It is more evidence of how crude and hateful and greedy Bush is. All of us senior citizens and our loving family members and friends should contact our Congress members and urge them to defeat Bush’s bad and unkind and anti-Christian attitude for all senior citizens who need Social Security and Medicare to continue living.

Also ask them to kick Bush out of the White House instantly.

Overpopulation devastates Earth

The Earth and every living thing on it — breathing or growing, on land, in the air, and under water — faces the risk of extinction. Virtually all of the threats can be traced to one source.

* Air pollution and water pollution — caused by too many people.

* Destruction of habitats, lessening the oxygen supply by the reduction of oxygen-producing trees — too many people.

* Rampant disease and starvation — too many people.

* Territorial wars to gain more living space — too many people.

* Overtaxed welfare and medical resources — too many people.

Anyone sense a pattern here?

There is no longer an excuse to create large families and continue to increase the population of human beings. Whether or not you can afford to have a large family, or if your ego demands many heirs to carry on your name, is irrelevant. We need to stop.

The old argument that God wants us to continue to breed doesn’t hold water. “And God said unto them, Be fruitful and multiply and replenish the Earth” (Genesis 1:28). He didn’t say, “Multiply and crowd yourselves and every other living thing into oblivion.” “Replenish” means, among other things, “to replace what is lacking.” We are certainly not lacking in people. Besides, He was speaking to a somewhat smaller audience at the time.

The means to reverse this trend exist and are readily available. We need to act individually to stop the rampant growth, and as a nation, we need to act by providing aid to those who will do the same — both to nations and individuals.

The converse is also true — stop encouraging and assisting others to continue the madness.

If not for ourselves, we must act for our children and theirs, and for other living things. Begin to stop now.

Ethanol scheme will bring crisis

In a September 2007 Global Research article, Charles E. Carlson wrote, “Eight years of biofuels (ethanol) policy and legalizations has cemented in place the first worldwide food cabal, which promises a humanitarian disaster, famine more serious than those caused by any tsunami, earthquake or drought. This crisis is not in the dim future, it’s here.”

Congress has in a series of laws passed in this millennium, handed the monopoly to giant agribusiness companies that already have enormous economic power, but which will become much broader cabals.

If you can afford $6 per gallon for milk, $4 for a loaf of bread and still have money left over for a $50 steak at Outback, you may be prepared for 2008, but what about the future?

Even though we may think we are prepared financially to buy food whatever the cost, we must have concern for the billions of souls who are not and are condemned to starvation by the corn-to-alcohol conversion scheme.

The corn-to-alcohol scheme is the biggest financial fraud of all time. The solution is in the earth under Alaska, the Pacific and Atlantic coasts, the Gulf of Mexico and the Midwest. Are these cabals preventing new refineries?
