Acts of kindness accumulating
Among the some 61⁄2 billion people living on this planet, how many trillions of acts of kindness are taking place hourly? Acts of generosity? Acts of love?
I see that the power in these actions is, for the first time in the history of this world, becoming cumulative and that this massive force will rise inevitably to a crest, at which moment it will become world news, drawing into it, by this way, millions of additional individuals.
As knowledge of it spreads to the far corners of the Earth, the miraculousness of its nature will have many crying or laughing or speechless, like never before.
No human will can stop it. There will be peace.

Many profiting from prison system
The prison industrial complex has grown in leaps and bounds, exacerbated and applauded by the large corporations. Keeping more and more people incarcerated for longer periods of time is in their best interest, and they spend a lot of money lobbying for this.
Among those profiting are the suppliers of goods and services to our facilities. Then there are those who transport the incarcerated from one location to another.
The construction of new prisons and the expansion of others has bolstered the construction industry, and prison design is a major new activity in the architectural profession. Construction bonds have become powerful investments for bankers and the private prisons where we send our overflow have no reason to operate other than for profit.
So, who is paying and who is profiting? It still costs the taxpayer about $74.44 per day for each and every person incarcerated. With more than 18,000 people incarcerated, do the math. The prison justice system is the largest part of our state budget, and thus, costs taxpayers dearly.

Nation needs ACLU more than ever
There goes Scott Stantis again — libeling the American Civil Liberties Union in his Christmas Day “Prickly City” cartoon. Shame! You imply that the ACLU is hostile to religion and opposed to people saying “Merry Christmas.”
You’re either ignorant or you know the truth but choose to pander to popular misconceptions and misrepresentations spread by the ACLU’s enemies. As America’s foremost champion of our Bill of Rights, the ACLU defends freedom of expression, including your right to publish cartoons that mislead and defame.
Though the ACLU defends personal expressions of faith, it opposes the entanglement of government and religion, which history has shown to be detrimental to both. Some choose to disregard those lessons of history and try to enlist the coercive power of government to “Christianize” America. As anti-abortion zealot Randall Terry of Operation Rescue declared: “Our goal is a Christian nation. We have a biblical duty; we are called by God to conquer this country.”
Even as American soldiers fight to establish secular governments in Iraq and Afghanistan, which will protect the rights of those of differing religions, back home, some groups are trying to undermine the wall of separation between church and state so they can impose their “biblical” morality and divine mandates on us.
They slander those who resist them and spread lies on the Internet. One example was their assertion that the ACLU opposed the crosses in Arlington National Cemetery. In fact, the ACLU was supporting veterans who wanted grave markers that reflected their personal religious beliefs.
With civil liberties and constitutional checks and balances under attack from outside and inside our government, we need the American Civil Liberties Union more than ever.

U.S. to establish bases in Africa
The following quotation from the Nov. 19, 2007, “The Nation” is disturbing:
“With little scrutiny from Democrats in Congress and nary a whimper from the liberal establishment, the United States will soon establish permanent military bases in sub-Sahara Africa. An alarming step forward in the militarization of the African continent, the U. S. Africa Command (Africom) will oversee all U.S. military and security interests throughout the region, excluding Egypt. Africom is set to launch by September 2008.”
So now we find out that the U.S. empire is expanding into Africa. There is no doubt this U.S. presence will involve intervention in the politics of African countries, similar to our 1953 intervention in Iran, replacing a duly elected government with the hated shah. We are now bearing the fruits of that action.
The above article also states that Africa supplies 15 percent of U.S. petroleum, increasing to 25 percent by 2015. So I wonder about the purpose of Africom.
Why did Congress, and our Washington delegation in particular, let this slip through quietly without public awareness?
If your reaction to this is similar to mine, I suggest you make your feelings known to our congressional delegation.

Wasn’t intending to mince words
Re: Patrick Goff’s Dec. 8 letter:
You are apparently well-read, and I cannot begin to match your writing skills. I think that you have quoted from several sources to support your beliefs. I have used only one so must be way behind you.
In reference to Matthew 7:1 about judging: Christians and non-Christians alike often quote that verse when confronted with their transgressions. It is not we who have the right to judge. There are other verses in the Bible that are just as personal.
For example, John 3:16-18, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.”
I have not meant to mince words, but to keep my letters short and to the point. Apparently, I have failed to do so. Nor have I meant to intimidate you and judge you but merely to express and defend my faith. And apparently I have failed again.
It is my hope, in all humility, that one day you will believe in God.
And we are created by the same God.

In a more perfect world …
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if there were no more wars, no more crime of any kind, no worries as to how we would pay for our health care, no people who are down and out, destitute with no hope, no people who thrive on power over others or no selfishness on anyone’s part.
I could go on and on, but these things are not possible to totally achieve in this imperfect world.
Why is the above only a pipe dream?
We all have been born with a human nature that has, along with good attributes, bad attributes. Unfortunately, no matter how hard we try to use only our good attributes, we always have the bad ones lurking there waiting in the back of our minds to catch us at a weak moment. This is the reason the wonderful things I mentioned above will never fully come about.
God’s word tells us how we can get the help we need to overcome our bad attributes (John 3:16, John 3:23, Rom. 5:8, Rom. 6:23, Rom. 10:9-10, Rom. 12:1-2, Eph. 2:8-9, 1 John 1:9).
He will help us to make a positive advance toward a more perfect world, but as long as you have people who don’t want to live by Christian principles, this will never come about, that is, until the second coming of Christ (Rev. 20:1-15).

Even though Barack Obama may win some of the caucuses, he still hasn’t won the presidential nomination.
He says he is a candidate for change, well, so is John Edwards. John Edwards has more experience than Barack Obama, and I feel that he would make the best candidate out of all those who are running.

Administration has damaged people
This is an important letter with evidence and reasons why President Bush, Vice President Cheney, and their administration and the GOP congress persons need to be immediately removed.
Bush demanded that Congress reduce social funds for all of us senior citizens, thereby financially, physically and mentally harming seniors and developmentally disabled citizens and children needing insurance. They want the money for all of their dishonest and criminal goals and ideas.
I and some of my friends and acquaintances have been physically hurt and mentally damaged because of the hateful and ungodly, greedy old political party, and so have two of my children and four adult friends and hundreds of U.S. citizens. I have talked to regional business owners who said getting rid of Bush, Cheney and the greedy old party Congress needs to be now to save the U.S.
