Runaway religious belief harmful
Regarding Martha Williamson: OK, I get it. You feel compassion on my behalf and believe I’m going to your hell; duly noted sans apprehension. I, too, feel compassion for you and hope one day you’ll experience the freedom, peace of mind and rationality that accompany the conquering of a religionist’s programmed fear of an implausible super daddy.
Regarding Kathie Dolton: For answers to “What if you are wrong?” please refer to my previous letters. Toward your further comment, I’ll exercise restraint, as my contempt for your religious organizations and what I consider their false doctrine may be confused with opposition to your right to believe whatever you choose.
I’ll instead address one issue regarding the harm that results from unrestrained religious supremacy. Consider the fact that values voters are almost exclusively motivated by Christian ideals and that they’re the single largest group responsible for bringing George W. Bush to power under the pretext of obeying their God’s will. And consider an estimated 500,000 to 1 million (children among them) have died as a result of our infamous leader’s invasion and occupation of Iraq. What if you are wrong? Not exactly something to feel good about now is it?
It’s tragic you can’t see that the anti-choice carrot is attached to a string and a stick, dangled in front of you by another version of a father figure epitomized by the elderly, wealthy white Christian male lineup that the Republicans continue to offer. And it’s sad that you’ll continue to vote against your best interests and ignore an overabundance of issues that only serve to make the über rich into the ultra wealthy.

Eternal torment is pagan concept
However well-meaning the Christian may be, it is biblically wrong for a person to condemn another. Jesus said in Luke 6:37, “Condemn not, and you will not be condemned.” Also the statement of John 3:18, “He who does not believe is condemned already,” was addressed to people who were living at that time and saw Jesus and the miracles. It cannot be applied to others.
A belief in “hell” is a mistake. The correct condemnation in the Bible story is — death. And what is death? It is certainly not living forever in torture. That gives the person eternal life. Only the saved have eternal life. Genesis 3:19 gives us the Bible’s definition of death: “You shall return to the ground … you are dust and to dust you shall return.”
Death in this context is a return not a going forward to anything. Death is called “sleep” throughout the Bible because it is like sleep in that the person is unconscious. Death is the total lack of life; it is a terrible thing — the worst. Resurrection rescues one from death.
The idea of eternal torment is a pagan doctrine that crept into Christian theology at an early date. It is not taught in the Bible. In fact the three words translated as “hell” in the King James Bible are mistranslations. The Greek word “Hades” for instance, actually means “not seen.” Misguided translators deliberately put their hell belief into the English Bible. Those defending this teaching must take statements out of context and misapply figures of speech.
Obtaining eternal life entails a lifestyle of honesty, compassion and freedom from pride. Particular knowledge is not needed, and there is forgiveness for honest mistakes.

Obama is right to lead America
It is absolutely about the war in Iraq. All the rest, the economy and the results — fewer resources for our infrastructure as a nation, reduced funding for services to our children and older citizens, pathetic care for the brave people fighting on our behalf, and inadequate care for those who return so wounded — are our failure to keep our covenant with the most needy in our society and to provide the beacon of hope that has been our gift to the world. It all comes back to the fateful decision to make invasion and occupation our disastrous foreign policy.
Obama is the only candidate who comes to us and the world with unbloodied hands. He is the only one who can stand before the world and, with any authenticity, expect its trust. We cannot know if he would have gone along with the vote to invade Iraq, but he didn’t. He didn’t, and the world will know.
This election is about winning hearts and minds: Here at home, we are paralyzed with cynicism, and abroad as well. I am not afraid of extremists or psychopaths. They have always existed. I am afraid of all the people who will turn away, who will choose not to see or get involved because they believe I am as cruel and greedy as my government. I am afraid of the people here at home who have no hope.
We may yet, for a while, be the most economically powerful nation in all of human history, but we have lost our moral and inspirational role. It will take someone who can pull together the most creative problem-solvers in our nation. The presidency is not about a manager. It is about collaboration, vision and the ability to help us believe in ourselves and rediscover our role in the world.

Dem Congress liked less than Bush
Has anyone else noted that with all the cry and bellowing that the Democrats did prior to the election as to how bad Bush was doing, that the Democratic-run Congress has a lower approval rating than Bush? It took him eight years. They have been able to beat him in both disapproval rating and in time it took to accomplish it. I do believe kudos are in order.

Huckabee has point on vote count
After all the ranting, lawsuits and charges of voter fraud during the 2004 governor race, which Dino Rossi lost, does anyone find the latest action of the Washington state Republican Party a bit hypocritical?
Luke Esser, the state Republican chairman, suspended the vote count with 87 percent turned in with John McCain leading by a mere 242 votes. I am not one to normally take sides with Republicans, but I think Mike Huckabee may have a good point, if not a lawsuit against Mr. Esser and his party. Hmmm, kind of reminds me of Florida in 2000. Maybe the Supreme Court can award this one, too.

Electronic voting easily corrupted
Let’s get voting and elections under the control of citizens.
I recently watched “Hacking Democracy.” In this film, two issues are abundantly clear: Electronic voting is not transparent and has many pathways for corruption. The enormous possibilities of manipulating the software makes it impossible to assure that they are unhackable. Second, the first problem is compounded by having the private sector build voting machines and writing the software. This is an invitation for criminal activity.
Why in the world do we make our lives so complicated and convoluted? In “Hacking Democracy,” an enormous amount of time and effort by experts and citizens was spent determining if voting machines can be hacked. And for every way they can be, there turns out to be countless other ways to corrupt data to accomplish a specific election outcome.
A sane solution to this perplexing problem is to return to a mechanical system for voting. While they are not foolproof, the magnitude at which they can be corrupted is minute and limited in scope. In addition, we need to beef up poll observation and mandate random sampling. These two actions would go a long way in keeping our elections honest.
To accomplish these two objectives, we need federal laws regarding federal elections that create uniform rules for the type of voting machines that can be used and the rules for conducting elections that all states comply with.

Can divided Dems win White House?
Know when to hold ’em. Know when to fold ’em. Several Republican hopefuls vying for the president’s office have chosen to place their cards face down. In the Democratic race, however, neither has backed off; placing their bets, raising the ante, their pot gets bigger and bigger.
Is the title of president worth it? One will have to lose the bet. Otherwise, in a fight to the bitter end, a Republican may win the pot.
A house divided against itself will not stand.

Many victims need a friend
Carole King wrote a sensational hit song in 1971 called “You’ve Got A Friend.” It appeared on her “Tapestry” album. The lyrics were catchy and everyone from that era probably remembers: “Winter, spring, summer or fall, all you have to do is call, and I’ll be there, yes, I will, cause you’ve got a friend.”
Now, almost forty years later, here’s how the seasons are panning out:
* Winter: Jan. 11 is National Human Trafficking Awareness Day.
* Spring: April is Child Abuse Prevention Month.
* Summer: TBA.
* Fall: October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
The song also contains these words as well: “People can be so cold, they’ll hurt you, yes, and desert you, they’ll take your soul if you let them, but oh, don’t you let them.”
If Carole King were to write some of these lyrics over again today, the song might sound something like this: People today are sold, pimps and traffickers hurt you and coerce you, they’ll sell your body and soul for profit, and you may be killed if you don’t let them.
Winter, spring, summer or fall all you have to do is call authorities if you or someone you know is being sexually exploited. These victims need a friend, and we may be all they’ve got.
