The Tigers’ baseball team is looking to fill some holes left by the seven seniors it lost to graduation last year. But the team has enough returnees from last year’s team that coach John Thurmond is hoping Burlington-Edison can pick up where it left off.
The team’s infield remains a strong point from last year. Jameson Acoba and Ian Capron are coming back for the Tigers at second base and short stop, respectively. A number of players will platoon at first base, Thurmond said, including returning junior Tyler McLeod. The only infield position up in the air is third base, which could be filled either by Zac Jensen or Zach Livingston.
Senior Brian Holmkvist will take over catching responsibilities from departed senior Travis Alvord this year. Although Holmkvist is new to varsity, he has plenty of catching experience, Thurmond said.
Burlington-Edison boasts two left-handed starters — seniors Scott Jensen and Grady Hansen — in their starting rotation, along with returnees Troy O’Neil and Byron Furney.
Kolby Arendse and Sean Stranksy will be looked to cover most of the outfield responsibilities for Burlington-Edison, but Arendse has been on the basketball court during the Tigers’ state run and has missed nearly two weeks of practice. Stranksy is coming off a knee injury in football that cost him the basketball season.
New-to-varsity players who may play an important role include outfielder Cole Whited and outfielder/infielder Quinn Holt.
“Our point of emphasis is playing good defense and throwing strikes,” Thurmond said. “We think as the season goes on, we’ll begin to hit the ball.”
The team will have a number of quality opponents in Northwest Conference play this year. Defending state 2A champion Sehome lost a number of players, but should still be looked at as the favorite, Thurmond said. Burlington-Edison reached the state tournament last year but lost its first game to Anacortes, another Northwest Conference squad.
“The league is going to be a lot like it was last year — one or two games could separate quite a few teams,” the coach said. “Every day will be a dog fight.”
