RENTON — Ultrarunners are always looking for another challenge. When running 100 miles over a couple days isn’t enough, they look for little wrinkles — small changes that make them push their bodies harder and stretch their mental limits.
Shawn Lawson is such an ultrarunner.
When the 30-year-old Burlington-Edison High School graduate went looking for something to really test her mettle, she found just that — the Susitna 100 in Alaska on Feb. 16.
“I think it’s curiosity,” said Lawson, who works as a legal assistant and lives in Renton. “You want to find out if you can do it. You do set some time goals. Obviously, those don’t always pan out.”
The Susitna 100 is an interesting endeavor. It’s a 100-mile course in the Susitna River Valley north of Anchorage, and is run on a groomed trail. Participants run, ski or bike the trail’s entire length.
At this year’s race, there were 70 starters, including 12 women. Of those 70, 24 men and eight women finished.
Lawson’s mode of race transportation was one with which she has become familiar. She used a couple pairs of running shoes on her way to the finish line.
Oh, and she had to pull a sled.
Yes, a sled.
Evidently the distance, terrain and weather weren’t enough for race officials. So competitors must pull a sled of supplies weighing a minimum of 15 pounds.
And that’s exactly what Lawson did for 46 hours, 49 minutes.
She crossed the finish line dead last. But that doesn’t matter. What matters is she finished. That is more than the 38 who scratched during the race can say.
“This is definitely the hardest race, mentally, that I’ve done,” Lawson said. “I didn’t run as much as I should have. In fact, I did much more walking.”
So, did Lawson do any sort of special training to get herself prepared for towing a sled? She did, but it wasn’t your typical training.
“I pulled a tire for nine miles, once,” Lawson said. “And that was the end of that. I relied on running races almost every week to get in shape. I wasn’t going to pull a tire again.”
On their sleds, racers were required to carry a minus-20 degree sleeping bag, closed cell foam sleeping pad, bivy sack or tent, headlamp or flashlight, rear flashing light, a two-quart insulated water container and one day of food (3,000 calories).
“You have to start and finish with the sled,” Lawson said. “Pulling it became easier as I got used to it.”
Other than the required items, what else is packed onto the sled it up to the individual. For Lawson, it was quite a bit. Her sled tipped the scale at 38 pounds.
“Everyone’s gear is checked to make sure they have the necessities,” Lawson explained. “They don’t want people to get out on the trail and not be prepared. They are big on safety.
“I was definitely over the minimum,” she added with a chuckle. “I wasn’t going to be unprepared.”
Because the distance between checkpoints tended to be vast (the Flat Horn Lake checkpoint was at mile 22 and 84; Wall of Death at mile 28.5 and 77.5; Eaglesong at mile 43.5; and Luce’s Lodge at mile 65), sleeping exposed along the route is a routine occurrence.
Most ultra checkpoints may simply boast a tent, a couple chairs and a table. At Susitna, the checkpoints are homes and inns with restaurants.
“You get there and you get to sit down and really, well, relax,” Lawson said. “You can eat soup and stay inside and warm up.”
And she did just that. Her longest stay was three hours at Luce’s Lodge: a checkpoint with a restaurant and cabins.
“I actually fell asleep,” Lawson recalled. “I woke up and had to get going. I realized that I still had time to finish. It was sort of an angry determination. I was relieved to see it was only 3 p.m. I had until 5 p.m. to make the next checkpoint. Honestly, I am actually very surprised I woke up.”
The section of the race that followed was her favorite.
“I had a lot of trouble staying awake that first night,” she said. “The second night, it was great. After my nap, I got up and realized I had a deadline. I had to move it. It was a clear night and the trail was right along the Yentna River. It was beautiful. It was cold, but beautiful.”
Lawson graduated from Burlington-Edison in 1995 and Washington State in 1999.
She began running ultra distance races about three years ago after hearing about another Burlington-Edison graduate, Krissy Mohl, charging across finish lines at ultramarathons. That inspired Lawson to give the massive distances a shot.
“Three years ago is when I started running again,” Lawson said. “I ran marathons while I was in college. Then my folks were telling me what Krissy was doing and it was much more than 26.2 miles.”
Since then, Lawson has logged a lot of miles as a member of the Marathon Maniacs. She’s ran a bushel of races over the 50-mile mark, and the Susitna race was her second at the 100-mile distance.
“I really don’t recall exactly how I heard about Susitna,” Lawson said. “But when I didn’t get into Western States (Western States 100 Endurance Run), I decided to run the Susitna.”
She didn’t see any bears or moose while running the trail. However, there were plenty of dogsled teams training for the Iditarod. The weather kept racers honest.
Many said it was the worst in the race’s history.
“There were times when it was a blizzard,” Lawson said. “It was so difficult this year that the women’s winner took 10 hours longer than she ran it the previous year. It was snowing and blowing so hard through the Dismal Swamp section, I had to put on goggles to see. The course is flagged, and it was all I could do to see that stick glowing in the distance. If you happened to step off the hard pack, you’d sink up to your knees in the snow.
“For the most part, it wasn’t that cold. I was really surprised. Most of the time I was able to take my gloves off. There’s a blizzard swirling all around you, but when you are out running through it, you are creating a lot of heat.”
The first night on the course was difficult. Lawson described it as the worst part of the race.
“Three in the morning was the last time I saw another competitor on the course,” Lawson said. “I had been running with a friend, then she pulled ahead and I got tired. I had to yell a lot to stay awake.
“Really, the hardest part is that you were so alone. The conditions were pretty extreme and the checkpoints were so far apart. It was hard not to say, ‘OK, I’m done at the next aid station.’ A lot of races you can break up into chunks. This one you can’t. It’s just grueling. It really tests your mentality.”
Lawson said she was looking for a race that would prove memorable, going as far to say the more miserable a race, the more memorable it tends to be.
In that case, the Susitna 100 is going to be hard, if not impossible, to forget.
“It’s about being out in it,” she said. “Convening with nature. I really enjoyed the experience.”
And what about a next time? Sure, why not? After all, now she’s a veteran.
“I would like to run it again,” Lawson admitted. “If I can get my husband to agree to it. I would definitely do some things differently. I certainly wouldn’t pack as much.
“But I really enjoyed it. It was a great experience. This is one that I will hold onto for a couple of weeks. It’ll stay with me for a while.”
