SELAH — The Burlington-Edison softball team wasn’t able to pull off back-to-back thrillers Saturday at the Class 2A state tournament.
The Tigers topped Colville 12-11 in a heart-stopping semifinal filled with twists, turns and comebacks. But Burlington-Edison couldn’t muster a second comeback in the finals, falling short of a state title with a 3-0 loss to Othello.
Othello pitcher Nina Gonzalez, who has stymied opposing lineups all season while helping the Huskies to a 21-1 record, held the Tigers to one hit and hit a run-scoring double in the victory.
Burlington-Edison’s second-place finish was the team’s best place since the team won a slowpitch title in 1987. The softball team was the fifth Burlington-Edison sports team to finish second at state this season, joining girls’ soccer, girls’ golf, football and boys’ basketball.
Burlington-Edison coach Darcy Taylor said this year’s run proved how hard the team has worked over the past few years.
“It says everything. These girls worked their butts off,” she said.
To get to the championship game, the Tigers had to battle their way through a tough semifinal game with Colville, which dug itself out of a 6-0 deficit to tie the game.
The Tigers jumped ahead behind a two-run home run from outfielder Holly Bradley and a two-run single from shortstop Amy Entriken, who later hit a solo shot to center field.
But Colville stormed back in the fourth inning with six runs of its own, with two coming on a double from first baseman Jackie Wetle.
The game quickly became a slugfest, with the Tigers going up 11-9 before Colville tied it, again, with a two-run sixth.
The Tigers finally took the lead for good when Entriken, who had walked to start the eighth, scapered home after an error following a single by Bradley.
Tigers pitcher Lindsey Dawson, who dominated in Friday’s action at the tournament, threw a scoreless eighth to secure the victory.
“It was the game of the tournament. Both teams came to battle,” Taylor said.
In the second game, the Tigers ran into another dominant pitcher in Gonzalez, who has helped the Huskies hold their opponents to just seven runs in the regular season, and none in the state tournament.
Gonzalez quieted the Tigers’ bats as the Huskies scored one run in each of the three innings on their way to the victory.
“They did a great job keeping us off-balance,” Taylor said. “For us to score none says a lot about their pitcher.”
Ariel Erlenbach, one of the two seniors on the squad, said the run was a special one for the Tigers (19-5) even if it ended short of a championship.
“It was really special. We’ve gone from ninth (place) to seventh to second in the four years I’ve been here. It’s great that all our hard work showed and we left it on the field today.”
