COUPEVILLE — The 2008 Coupeville Memorial Day Parade and Remembrance Ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday. MOUNT VERNON — A memorial dedication ceremony will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 24, at the Washington State University Skagit County Master Gardener Display Garden on the grounds of the Northwestern Washington Research and Extension Center at 16650 SR 536. The ceremony will dedicate a new marker to restore the memorial significance of Memorial Highway, State Route 536, west of Mount Vernon. The Rev. Ron Deegan of First Baptist Church in Mount Vernon will serve as master of ceremonies for the dedication. Speakers will recount the story of Memorial Highway and the history of the monument followed by a reading of the names of the Skagit Valley soldiers who lost their lives in World War I, the playing of taps and retiring of the colors. A reception will follow in the Sakuma auditorium.
In 1931, the highway was designated as Memorial Highway and both sides of the roadway were planted with 180 elm trees to memorialize the Skagit County citizens who gave their lives in World War I. Today all but three of the trees have died or been cut down. A memorial stone engraved to again memorialize Skagitonians lost in “the war to end all wars” has been installed in a circular arbor in the rose garden of the Master Gardeners’ Display Garden just west of the NWREC. ANACORTES — American Legion Post 13, Veterans of Foreign Wars and others will hold a series of memorial services Monday at three cemeteries on Fidalgo and Guemes islands. Veterans will meet at 9 a.m. at the Guemes Ferry dock, 500 I Ave., Anacortes, and proceed to the Edens Cemetery, Edens Road, Guemes Island for a brief ceremony. They will return to Anacortes for a 10:30 ceremony at the Grandview Municipal Cemetery, 411 Hillcrest Drive. Their final stop will be an 11 a.m. ceremony at Fern Hill Cemetery, 7427 Highway 20. CONWAY — Mason-McConkey American Legion Post 147 of Conway will have a memorial service at 11 a.m. Monday at Fir-Conway Lutheran Cemetery on Milltown Road. The Rev. Roger Patrow will be the speaker, with refreshments to follow the service.
FRIDAY HARBOR — Hacket Larson Post 163 of the American Legion and residents of Friday Harbor will offer a Memorial Day Parade and Commemoration at 10 a.m. Monday. There will be a parade along the first two blocks of Spring Street and a ceremony at the town’s waterfront Memorial Park, the first monument erected in Washington to honor those who died in WWI. FERNDALE — Moles Greenacres Memorial Park, 5700 Northwest Drive, will present the Memorial Day weekend “Festival of Flags,” featuring 1,400 flags, family activities, speakers, refreshments and more from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday through Monday, May 24-26. The raising of the flags will begin Saturday morning with children’s activities, World War II memorabilia and living history displays, storytelling and refreshments planned for all three days. The Albert J. Hamilton Remembrance Ceremony from 2 to 3 p.m. Monday will include speakers, a veterans’ flag-raising, presentations to vet families, music and a fly-over by former Apollo 8 astronaut Greg Anders in a vintage aircraft from Bellingham’s Heritage Flight Museum. MOUNT VERNON — The Mount Vernon Cemetery, 1122 S. Third St., will hold a memorial service at 1 p.m. Monday. The Rev. Ron Deegan will lead the service, which will include vocal and piano solos and a military medley with buglers and an accordion band.
