Transfer station not good for S-W
I just want to echo the thoughts put forth in previous letters to the editor against the new recycle/garbage transfer station in Sedro-Woolley. To put this business in a residential area so close to the high school seems as though it would be a terrible mistake. If given the opportunity, I would vote against it.
It seems this space could be used for some purpose that would be of much greater benefit to the community. The money it would bring does not offset the negative impact it would have for the people who live and work and attend school in this community.

Clarifications about rainbow fest
I am a co-president of the Mount Vernon High School Gay/Straight Alliance, but to be clear, I am not in any way speaking on behalf of the club. I am simply speaking to voice my thoughts about Carolyn Nichols’ March 11 Letter to the Editor.
I’m ecstatic to hear that she attended the Over the Rainbow Festival. Although, I’m saddened to hear that she believes our mission was to entice young people to become sexually active. I’m assuming that this belief comes from the optional Safe Sex workshop. And as a side note, if kids are going to have sex, wouldn’t you want them to be safe about it? I would certainly think that the mother of one of my peers will be saying yes to that.
As someone who understands the religious aspects of this issue from personal experience, I know that religion is a solid foundation for some people. I respect that. But I find that quite often (not to say the “pro” homosexuality side doesn’t do some form of this) those opposed to the issue who use the religious argument(s) forget that not everyone has the same belief. I feel it is unfair to bring religion into it.
I imagine that most people arguing from that perspective have worn clothing consisting of two or more types of fabric. And I don’t think they have sold their daughters to the highest bidder because the Bible told them to. Their absolute truth may not be mine. And what I do behind closed doors is my business.
Some people may feel uncomfortable seeing my girlfriend and I hold hands because we’re both women, but what if I felt uncomfortable seeing you and your husband holding hands? To say that what I do (or don’t do) affects my future negatively because it goes against God’s standard is unfair. And if it’s my future, why should others care enough to spend time fretting over my decision?

County should protect farmland
Many things about the proposed wetland mitigation banks in Skagit County are of deep concern to me. The loss of farmland and the apparent paralysis of county government to stop it are primary.
There is a good article on the controversy in Capital Press, March 7. You can read it yourself by typing “Capital Press” into your browser. Once there, click on “West Ore/Wash. News” at the top of the page. Scroll to the item, “Wetland bank plan awash in concerns” and click.
In the article, Skagit County government comes across as powerless to act to save farmland. Commissioner Munks is cited as feeling that the county can either be sued for not letting the application go through the county’s permitting process, or it can be sued if the project ends up causing problems — flooding for example.
We know for sure that the project will cause the loss of farmland. It would seem that the county is using every tool but courage in its arguments. And we see that.
To quote from the article directly: “County Senior Planner Betsy Stevenson said if the owners of the proposed wetlands mitigation bank go through all of the necessary procedures to get permitted, it wouldn’t be wise for the county to deny the project. In other words, the county could be sued.”
If there’s no way to avoid being sued in any event, why not get sued while trying to save farmland?
We must to stand up for the farmland. Now is the time.
