The Northwest Conference demonstrated their dominance in girls 2A golf as the conference placed four teams in the top seven at state, with the Anacortes Seahawks claiming the seventh slot at Homestead in Lynden May 20-21.
Two-time state qualifier Crystal McDaniels led Anacortes with a 16th-place finish after rounds of 92 and 95 for 187.
McDaniels spoke of her performance at state with mixed pride and regret.
“I worked for a year on my game with some top instructors, along with my dad, to reach my goal of making the top six, since my finish in the 2007 state tournament was only in the top 30,” she said.
“I believe that I am the first to place at state for two consecutive years, along with finishing the highest of any Anacortes girl at 16th. This is something that I’m proud of, but still I feel that I let my team, school and myself down by not medaling at state this year.”
Japanese exchange student Asuka Nagata shot rounds of 97 both days to finish in 27th for a total of 194.
“Asuka had a great season and improved all the way through to the state tournament,” said Scott Dickison, Anacortes’ girls golf coach.
Sehome edged Burlington-Edison 106-104 for the state championship and Bellingham took third for a sweep of the top three spots for Northwest Conference golf teams.
