Six students flying to Florida later next month
For many of his fellow classmates, hearing Concrete senior Kirk Casorla speak about vertical farming and plasma converters often yields one question.
Huh?
The 18-year-old, who’s planning on going into aerospace technology at Embry-Riddle College in Florida, and his fellow senior Eddie Mitchell will be putting their knowledge into action for the last time as high school students next month.
Casorla and Mitchell will join three other Concrete High School students at the 30th National Technology Student Association Conference in Orlando, Fla. During the five-day event, the local students will be going up against some of the worlds’ most savvy young minds in competitions covering science, technology, engineering and math.
The conference takes place from June 27 to July 2.
“Nationals are a whole new level of competition,” said Casorla, who made the trip last year with Mitchell.
In addition to the two seniors, junior Britnie Oversby, sophomore Launi Harrell and freshman Evan Holm will make the trip to Florida. This year marks the third year adviser Mike Criner’s students have traveled to the national conference.
Casorla and Mitchell entered a project into last year’s competition in the agriculture and biotechnology design event. The project, which discussed how waste management companies could reduce refuse by using electromagnetic fields to break down and separate elements, won the duo a first-place finish at state.
The duo’s presentation this year is on vertical farming — an experimental method of building large, layered structures that can be used to grow goods on urban areas. Artists’ renditions look similar to skyscrapers, but instead of stories, vertical farms have layer upon layer of miniature farms.
Casorla said they’ve spent more than 10 hours on the project, and have created a notebook accounting their research.
Joining the seniors will be first-year competitor Oversby, who placed second in the state desktop publishing event in March. Oversby has taught herself to use Adobe Photoshop and PageMaker, and will demonstrate her knowledge by creating a poster and a newsletter during the conference.
Judges grade contestants based on different criteria.
“You’re given a grade sheet on how you do,” Oversby said. “It’s going to be a lot harder than state, though.”
Finally, Harrell and Holm will enter a short video they helped create using Microsoft Movie Maker during the year for aerospace supplier Hexcel Corp. The video, which also helped the team place second at state, will be used for training new employees.
After re-shooting the footage and cleaning up the sound, the three-minute video will be judged at nationals.
“It’s difficult to keep under three minutes,” Harrell said. “We have to know what’s important and what isn’t.”
