Coffeehouse philosophers ponder the big questions

ANACORTES — What brings people together to ask questions so big, they’re not even supposed to come up with an answer?

This may seem counterproductive in these results-oriented times, but the five men and one woman who gathered for a “Socrates Café” session in a downtown café recently were only there to wonder out loud and to bounce thoughts off each other.

It would seem the ancient art of philosophy, which is Greek for “love of wisdom,” is alive and well in Anacortes.

Konrad Kurp, in long hair and gray beard, brimmed with enthusiasm as he spoke about self-worth, the topic of the day at the club’s March meeting.

Despite the potential for high-mindedness that a philosophical discussion might entail, Kurp kept his observations simple.

“By being busy, living the daily life, staying upright, not falling flat, not disappointing — there’s a lot of self -regard to be gained there,” Kurp said in a distinct German accent.

Caught up in the thought that happiness really was about the simple things, Kurp continued, “This is a luxury, sitting at this table, debating theoretical life questions.”

Across the table, Bill Harper sported a white beard like Kurp’s, but his demeanor suggested a little more of an American blue-collar sensibility. Harper’s response to Kurp was somewhat paradoxical:

“It’s a luxury all right, but I’m wondering if it’s not one of those necessary things.”

The meetings have helped the regulars grapple with some big life questions. Many are retired, and they’ve confronted the crisis of identity that comes with leaving a lifelong profession.

“I find myself going in a circle now. I’m back to the interior person I started with, with no identity at all,” said Elaine Lachlan, who was attending her first Socrates Café in Anacortes.

To illustrate what the meetings are about, Kurp showed a copy of a German editorial cartoon.

In the cartoon, a man is lifting an enormous box with exclamation points on its sides. What the box had been hiding is a question mark inscribed on the floor.

As Harper put it, the group seeks “knowledge for the sake of knowledge.”

“It gives people the opportunity to go deeper into subjects,” Kurp said. “We have hectic lives, where conversations are always on the surface. They’re functional, they’re operational and they don’t get into the reflective mode where you think, ‘What are we doing? What is this all about?’”

Ben McBroom of Anacortes delivers newspapers part-time, leaving time for researching and writing. McBroom has written philosophical texts and published them locally under the pseudonym Aengus Song.

When asked why he attends the café, McBroom said, “I know something about Socrates. I’m curious about how philosophical questions are asked and how they’re answered.”

The café is something of a phenomenon. Started by philosopher and writer Christopher Phillips in New Jersey in 1996, the movement has caught on. More than 300 cafés now meet worldwide.

The movement’s founder subscribes to the Socratic notion that a philosophical life can lead to a richer existence.

As Socrates told a jury in 399 B.C., when he faced the death penalty for instigating the youth to question social norms, “The unexamined life is not worth living.”

Mike VanQuickenborne, the facilitator of the Anacortes café, does not claim to be a stand-in for Socrates. The ancient Greek philosopher would ask questions to prompt his students to make certain discoveries more or less on their own.

“That’s not what I do,” said VanQuickenborne, an Anacortes resident and a philosophy instructor at Everett Community College. “Participants generate the questions. That’s the critical thing that makes this work.”

At the beginning of each café, participants suggest questions; then the group votes on which one will be the topic of the day.

VanQuickenborne avoids dominating the conversation. The recent discussion on self-worth ambled into other territory, from responsible parenting to politics.

Harper may have unwittingly evoked Socrates when he said, “I don’t think anyone ever in the history of mankind has been satisfied with their government.”

Ken deRussy of Anacortes responded by saying that the critics should keep in mind that politicians are human after all.

“Who do they think the government is. It’s just a bunch of people, just like us. ... No whining,” deRussy said.

The discussion remained above the fray of this year’s elections. It touched on the socialist-type systems in some European countries, compared to America’s more free-market society.

At issue was whether self-worth was more attainable in a society where the basics of life — food, shelter and health care — are a given, but where the classic American rags-to-riches tale has no place.

Sympathetic to the European perspective, Kurp offered this formula for a strong self worth: “Low expectations, high hopes.”

Not that the question of the day was ever answered. In fact, VanQuickenborne said, the meetings are not supposed to end with the definitive answer.

By thriving even while defying the expectations society has for results and quick decisions, the Socrates Café confirms that VanQuickenborne’s career choice still has a place in the modern world.

“I think philosophy is extremely important,” the instructor said. “I’d say it more than any other discipline strives to give people the tools to think in ways that wouldn’t be available otherwise.”
