Raschel Richards hopes members of Anacortes Christian Church and others will show kindness to Iraqi children and support for Kyle Young, a local man serving in the Air Force, by donating a few small items he can distribute to kids when he’s on duty.
“I hope we can fill up a box with stuff the kids would love, but I think Kyle is giving the best present of all — kindness,” Richards said.
The effort started because Richards’ family sent Young a holiday gift box.
“Kyle’s sister has been my daughter’s best friend since first grade. They are both seniors now. Our family sent Kyle a Christmas package and he sent us an e-mail thank you and a request for a ‘favor,’” Richards said.
“All the Iraqi kids here pretty much have nothing,” he wrote. “They don’t have anything ‘cause their parents basically can’t afford anything. When we go out on missions to our station, we usually go mingle with the children and give them candy and other things. My question is, could you ask the church if they would like to help donate toys, stuffed animals, candy, etc.?”
Young has been overseas with the Air Force since October and will be there through 2008 or longer, Richards said. Initially she thought he was in Kuwait, but he now mentions Iraqi kids and the Iraqi police stations he guards.
“I believe this is Kyle’s first trip outside the U.S. so he is experiencing firsthand what it is like to make do with less for himself, and to see how others live. His request was for small stuffed animals, toys and candy that he and his buddies could hand out to the kids they come in contact with. I was touched by his compassion for the kids he sees playing in the street,” she said.
“All the children here play soccer and the only ball that I’ve seen them play with is pretty old and flat,” he wrote.
Richards said she’s doing nothing remarkable.
“All I did was pass along his request to the church and offer to organize the collection. If anyone would like to, they can drop off their donation to the Anacortes Christian Church at 12th and M Avenue,” she said.
