The Skagit County Democratic Party has nominated Anacortes City Councilman Bill Turner for the county commission seat Don Munks will vacate at the end of the year.
Turner received twice as many votes as his opponent Leo Jacobs at the Democratic Party nominating convention at the Anacortes Public Library on Sunday, May 18.
The selection was made by precinct committee officers from the Skagit County group before they joined precinct members from the 40th Legislative District to nominate Kevin Ranker for the state Senate seat being vacated by Harriet Spanel.
The purpose of the nomination convention was to address the recent Supreme Court decision limiting the general ballot to two candidates. Those two candidates will be selected in the Aug. 19 primary — the two top vote getters are the only ones to go on to the Nov. 4 general election no matter their party affiliation.
“It (the convention) is a process where the Democratic precinct officers select who they want to bless with their nomination,” said Skagit County party chair Glen Bordner.
It’s important to narrow down the choices in a crowded field, such as the Senate race where five people were hoping to run as Democrats, Bordner said. Splintered votes could cause no Democrat on the general ballot and give the Republican Party the edge.
Turner and Jacobs made five-minute statements on what they hoped to achieve and answered questions from the audience at the beginning of the nominating convention.
Only precinct committee officers from County Commission District 1 voted for the commission nomination.
It’s the same in the primary where only the population within the district votes for the candidates vying for that seat.
District 1 includes the precincts in Anacortes, La Conner, Bay View, Bow, Edison and the Blanchard area.
But because each precinct does not have the same population numbers, the precinct officers’ votes were counted on a weighted scale. It equaled out to roughly 1 vote per 100 people, Bordner said.
Turner received 98 votes and Jacobs received 49 from the 23 precinct officers attending the convention.
“I expected to get it and wanted to get it,” Turner said. “That’s my party.”
Turner said he’s been a Democrat for a long time and usually votes Democrat. He also said he has more political experience than Jacobs, having worked in politics in Skagit Valley since the early 1990s.
The party’s decision does not mean Jacobs, who lives in the Bay View area and is solid waste supervisor for Sedro-Woolley, cannot run in the primary. He is just not endorsed by the party of his choice.
The nomination gives the party focus and sends a signal to voters whom the party actively supports, Bordner said. But it does not take away the voters’ right to make their own decision.
