Director of Public Works and City Engineer Mark Freiberger has a lot of work to do for the city of Sedro-Woolley.
But after hiring Mark Stockton as assistant city engineer, dividing out the tasks should become a little easier, city officials said, as the purpose of the position is to help relieve the city engineer’s workload.
Stockton began his first day on the job last Monday as Freiberger showed him the ropes of the new job.
The city of Sedro-Woolley has a lot of work to be done, Stockton said.
“I already know I’ll learn a lot,” he said.
Stockton will work closely with Freiberger and some of his responsibilities will include reviewing development plans and dealing with road, sewer and storm drainage projects, Freiberger said, adding that he is both glad and relieved to have filled the position.
The Sedro-Woolley City Council approved the position in 2007. However, city officials said they delayed filling the position as Frieberger was a new hire at the time and wanted him to be accustomed to his job for input on the assistant city engineer job description.
Stockton has a mature approach and balanced view of things that will help him face the daily pressures with the timelines and review processes with projects, Freiberger said.
“I think we are going to have a productive working relationship here,” he said.
Stockton holds a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering and another in civil/environmental engineering, along with several certificates and state qualifications.
Prior to being hired in Sedro-Woolley, he worked 18 years at Boeing as an industrial/systems engineer, worked for the Covington Water District in southeast King County as a project engineer and most recently worked as the city engineer in Ferndale.
He said as the new assistant city engineer in Sedro-Woolley, he is looking forward to working closely with Freiberger and learning all the aspects of development and civil engineering.
He said he hopes to develop a good working relationship with other cities in Skagit County with opportunities to problem solve with other city engineers.
The assistant city engineer position will be a great opportunity for Stockton, Freiberger said. So far, Stockton and Frieberger said they are hitting the ground running.
“I’m just trying to catch the bus,” Stockton said.
