Anacortes’ youth rowing club Crew 81 brought home the Queen’s Cup for the second consecutive year by placing first overall at the Pacific Challenge sailing and seamanship competition May 17 at the Center for Wooden Boats in Seattle.
Nine teams from Aberdeen, Seattle, Vashon Island, Port Townsend, Anacortes and Olympia competed in the day-long seamanship competition on Lake Union, said David Jackson, one of Crew 81’s coaches.
An annual competition for youth, the Pacific Challenge is held in a different seaport each year. Events include rowing and sailing races as well as tests of maritime skills such as navigation, knot tying, man overboard drills and heaving-line throwing. It draws competitors from up and down the West Coast, and most participants are 14 to 18 years old.
All vessels are wood and powered by eight to 10 rowers and sails. Most are heavy long boats, which are 26 feet in length with a beam of 7 feet and a 2-foot draft.
“Anacortes got off to a great start nailing the navigation and heaving line events in the morning,” Jackson said. “In the afternoon, back-winded by a seaplane, Anacortes came in second in the sailing race then walked away with first place in a long, arduous rowing race.”
An international panel of judges included Anacortes residents Andy Stewart, Torgy Torgerson and Doug Jones. The judges were tight-lipped during the competition, but in the end felt that Anacortes again deserved the Queen’s Cup, Jackson said.
“Crew 81 is a community sponsored program and thanks the many residents and clubs that allowed them to compete this year with substance and style,” he said.
