ANACORTES — They’re in demand.
Just 2 1⁄2 years after their debut concert, Cantabile of Skagit Valley has performed at the Skagit River Shakespeare Festival, has taken the stage with Skagit Opera during performances of “Marriage of Figaro” and “Amahl and the Night Visitors,” and was one of five choirs chosen to participate in the third annual Leavenworth Music Festival in February.
This all-volunteer group would be busier still — if they didn’t need more time, well, for their day jobs and other pesky interferences.
“Our people are doctors and lawyers, and have other demanding jobs, and they’re busy,” said Lynne Rheinhardt, co-founder of the choir.
The group will wind up its busy 2007-08 season with “Of Love and Nature” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, June 7, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 415 S. 18th St., Mount Vernon. The show will include four sets of songs about — as the title suggests — love and nature, with tunes including “If Music Be the Food of Love,” “I Am Not Yours,” “Flight of the Bumblebee,” “And the Night Shall be Filled With Music,” and “Danny Boy,” to name a handful.
Rheinhardt said she’s pleased with the group’s success. After all, for Rheinhardt, bringing the group together was a dream come true.
“I was in a swing choir in high school and absolutely loved it,” she said. She had tried to get involved with groups before, but either couldn’t find any she enjoyed or moved around so much she couldn’t stick with them.
When she finally settled down in Skagit County in 2003, she began singing with Skagit Chorale and met David Cross. Rheinhardt suggested pulling together a group of singers to perform at the 2005 Skagit Habitat for Humanity’s Holiday fundraising concert in La Conner.
The concert was a success, and then Rheinhardt and Cross decided to officially set up a group. They began auditioning singers from across the county. Some were highly talented singers who had been traveling to Bellingham to sing with the chamber choir there. The singers were excited about having a small, professional quality choir so close to home.
Eventually, Rheinhardt and Cross were able to gather about 20 singers to create the county’s first official chamber choir.
The singers came up with the name Cantabile, which means “smooth, flowing, lyrical” or “song-like.”
After the Habitat concert, the group began a regular itinerary of concerts with the Anacortes Senior Center, Anacortes Middle School and several churches in the area. As word spread about their clean sound and presentation — unlike other chorale groups that traditionally all wear black, the women in Cantabile often wear colorful, elegant gowns of a style that they each choose — the invitations rolled in to perform with other singing and music groups, including the An-O-Chords, Skagit Opera and Skagit Symphony.
Then in February, the group auditioned for and was chosen to perform in the Leavenworth Music Festival. The group was treated to seminars on a variety of ways to improve.
“It was educational for us to learn a little more about singing and presentation,” Cross said.
Now the group is concentrating on its next season, with plans for Christmas concerts, including one at the Monroe State Penitentiary, Cross said. The group also has a spring concert scheduled with the La Conner Institute of Performing Arts.
For the most part, though, the group plans to give fewer performances.
“What thrills me the most is the recognition of the group and that people are asking us to perform with them,” Cross said. “It’s really been a neat grass-roots kind of thing that’s taken off.”
